The definition of hormetic is the response to a dose of stress needed to produce a positive (anabolic) change in physiology or biology. This entire process is called Hormesis. This dose would be toxic or deadly in large doses but is safe and highly beneficial in the correct dosage.
Exercise is the best example of this. When we work out, we create stress on the body that elevates measurable biomarkers (inflammation, oxidative stress, soreness, heart rate, etc.). Outside of exercise, all of these symptoms would be highly concerning. However, those symptoms are necessary to create change in your body to come back better each day. Poor programming leads to your body producing too many or too little of these symptoms, resulting in a negative change or no change at all.
